Çeşme
As
being one of the most popular tourist attractions, Çeşme ( Cyssus
) is prefered by both native and foreign tourists.
Witşh its history going back to 1400 B.C. Çeşme’s history begins
with the Ionian town of Erythia. Settlement began with the Lykians
, Karya , and Pamfilians . Later on the Lydians , Persians , Greeks
and Spartians played a role in the area. Çeşme gained its independence
with the conquest of Alexander the Great in 334 B.C. Followed by
Celtic and Galat invasions it was later made part of the Roman Empire.
Afterwards it came under Turkish sovereignty. After World War I,
it was again placed under Greek domination until it was taken back
by the Turks in the War of Liberation.
With
such a rich history it is not surprising that Çeşme is abundant
in historical relics. Among these are , the Çeşme Castle built in
1508 , the Caravanserai built by Kanuni Sultan Süleyman in 1529
, 16 Fountains all traces of Turkish culture , tombs , mosques ,
mosque remains and its large cementary also Çeşmeköy a typical example
of 11 th century Turkish settlement , Erythrai location of the Athena
Temple ( some pieces of which can be found on display in the İzmir
Archeological Museum and Çeşme Museum ) .
Together with its beautiful historical remains Çeşme is also one
of the most popular tourist attraction in Turkey, with approximately
20 beaches , healing waters and spa ‘s .
Night life is also very colourful in Çeşme . In the past years Alaçatı
has become a very popular site for surfers. It is also possible
to practice all kinds of watersports including underwater diving.
After
the opening of the yacht marina in Çeşme ferryboat expeditions to
and from Greece and Italy have become popular. Also it is very easy
to access Çeşme from Adnan Menderes Airport in İzmir .
