Efesos
According to Strabon, one of the writers
of the early age, Efes was the name of an Amazon. Remains of the
Miken Tomb are among the first remains to be found in the area.
Efes is estimated to date as far back as 14-13 B.C. Begining with
the Dor and Ionian movements into the area and continuing with the
Greek Androklos who decided to settle on the skirts of Bülbül Mountain
with his friends in 10 B.C. The establishment of Efes later on was
carried on by the Lydians.
The most prosperous period for Efes was
in 6th century a time when Kallinos, Hipponaks and Herakleitos lived
in Efes. The Persians who occupied the area did not interfer in
Efes’s internal or outside affairs they only implemented taxes and
thus Efes continued to live its most prosperous period. Alexander
the Great conquered Efes in 334 B.C. and it continued to be under
his rule until his death where upon the Roman commander Sulla placed
Efes under Roman rule once more . 37 B.C. is the begining of the
spread of Christianity in the area and in turn Efes came under Byzantinium,
Turkish, and Ottoman occupancy.
The only God the people of Efes worshipped was Artemis of Efes.
Many statues and other artifacts associated with Artemis can be
viewed at the Archeology Museum in Selçuk.
