Fokai
Surrounded by the sea on three sides , situated on a half island
covered with pine grove, the coast of Foça has many islands resembling
the seals which have lived there throughout history.
Foça
has a documented history of three thousand years. Settlement started
with the Dor’s , Aka and Aeol ‘s in 1200 B.C. and there is also
belief that the city was built by the people of Teos and Erythrai.
The people of Phocaea were sailors resulting in a high level of
culture in the area. The Phocaean’s started the colonisation movement,
believed to be a sign of vitality and liveliness they carried the
“Rooster” all the way to Marshelles, Corsika, Nice, and Antib. It
is believed that this rooster is the ancestor of the French “Gal
Rooster”
After the Persian sovereignty in the area the Phocaean’s moved to
colonies they had set up in the Meditteranean. They returned in
535 B.C. With the arrival of Alexander the Great in 334 B.C. the
Persians left the area and the people were given their independance.
Later Phocaea was taken by the Selevkoslians , Pergamum Kingdom,
Romans, and Byzantine’s.
During
the Roman period (17 B.C.) the area suffered a large earthquake.
The Venetians rebuilt old Phocaea and new Phocaea was rebuilt by
the Genovian merchants, the area developed into an important trade
place. Afterwards The Ottomans set up sovereignty in Phocaea.
Phocaea has many remains from these various civilisations, some
of these are;
- Taş ev (Stone house, a mausoleum
built in 4 B.C.)
- Dışkale (Outer Castle, containing
remains of a Turkish Bath in its interior)
- Ağalar Konağı (Masters Residence,
Atatürk was a guest at this residence which was built in 19
B.C. )
- Şeytan Hamamı (Devil's Bath,
a family cemetary dating back to the antic ages)
- Sur ve Beşkapılar ( Castle Walls
and Fivedoors, dating back to the Middle Ages )
- Fatih Camii (Fatih Mosque, 1455)
- Osmanlı mezarlığı (Ottoman Cemetary,
1520-1566 )
- Hafiz Sultan Mescidi (Small
Mosque)
There have been three archeological excavations in Foça since 1912
.During these excavations stone monuments, remains from the Hellenic
and Roman periods , evidence of the Archaic period and Athena Temple,
ceramics dating back to the Roman Empire and 7 B.C. and 6 B.C. and
also Anatolia ‘s oldest theatre and castle walls ( 570-560 B.C.
) , have been found.
Another attraction is the “ Siren Rocks”. The Siren’s, known for
the magical music they made, are believed to have confused the passing
ships thus making them crash into these rocks where they supposedly
lived.
With its natural beauty, scenic bays, various different kinds of
fish and particularly the Meditteranean Seals (Monachus) ,which
are kept under preservation and have been living in the area for
thousands of years, Foça has much to offer. According to scientists
the largest seal colony is believed to reside in the Aegean.
