| Metropolis
Name
of Torbalı , a district located on a
productive and rich land, is estimated to have derived from Metropolis,
i.e. Tripoli, one of the 12 Ionian cities.
Metropolis
was founded during the time of Selevkos in Torbalı,
whose habitation goes back to the 3rd century B.C.
Excavations
in the area had prooven that the city was one of the most important
wine centers of Anatolia, prospered vitally in 2000 B.C. and that
it gave home to the first city coins.
Same as
it used to be in the Early Hellenistic times,when Torbalı
was a wealthy city, today fruit producing and olive are still important
sources of income.
Metropolis,
which had been siezed by the Hitits, afterwards came under Lydian,
Persian, Macedonean, Selevkos and Pergamon sovereignity. Later,
after Hun and Arabian conquest, in 1081 the city came
under Turkish sovereignity , till Byzantiums took the city
under their rule in 1098. Metropolis, after being under Ottoman
sovereignity between 1327-1919, was held by the Greeks till 1922,
then taken by the Turks again.

Besides,
the altar stone, oil-lamps and solid statues found in theUyuz Dere
Cave leads us to the fact that ,it used to be a temple cave.
Today,
especially owing to the prosper in car industry, the district is
an industries zone.
