Priene
Priene,
one of our beautiful historical places, whose road sign you will
notice on the way to Bodrum, lies at the skirts of Mykele Mountain,
wathcing the grassy plain underneeth.
The plain , which at a time was actually part
of the Aegean Sea, was filled by the threat of the Meander River
to bury it. As a result of that, having lost its coast, the city
lost its importance. Later on, in 350 B.C., the city whose ruins
can be seen today was founded. No remainings belonging to the prior
city had been found.
Today, you can see the old water cisterns, tamples
of Egyiptian Kings and the Theatre. The council meetings were held
in the theatre, and the king would sit in the middle. The city was
formed in accordance to the plan of Hippodamos.
The Byzantinium Church, gymnasion, The Bath, Demeter temenos and
the Athena tample are a must to see. The Council meetings were also
held in the Bouleuterion, whose capacity is 640 people. The most
spesific speciality of this building was the ever burning flame,
which was believed to be holly. There were houses and markets on
two sides of the main road. Some of the pillars of the Athena Tample
were restored and some of the monuments belonging to the alter had
been carried to the ?stanbul Archeology Museum.
The city, in chronological order, was ruled by
first Alexander the Great, Pergamon Kimgdom, Roman Empire and last
of all the Byzantiniums untill 12. century.
We visited Priene for you. Emazed by the majesty of the Mykele Mountain
and the view of the large lowland, we fell into dreams and felt
as if the holly flame was still by us...
