Sardes
Sardes, the capital city of the Lydian
Kingdom, is located near Manisa-Salihli, on the road to Ankara.
The Government Palace and the other offical buildings were defended
by strong city walls against possible attacks. Gold refineries and
jewelery shops had been found during the excavations in the area.
These shops were located near Sardes River. On the other hand, Akropol
excavations brought the archeologists across numerous Byzantium
monuments.
Houses belonging to the people of Sardes were extremely simple.
In general, they were made up of sun-dried brick walls and reed
roofs. Most of them consisted of only one room.
Sardes, when attacked by the Kymers at the second half of the 7th century,
then had to be surrounded by thick city walls.
The grave of the King and the Queen were made of rather heavy
marble blocks.
The Artemis Altar, which was built in 3000 B.C. resambles
the Kybele Altar. Later excavations had prooven that the altar actually
had been dedicated to Artemis. The construction of this altar had
been completed in three levels. Then, in 4th century A.C. it was
started to be used as a church.
Sardes, where the excavations are still carried on, for sure,
is a must to see. We have been to that marvelous historical place
for you. The taste of delicious Salihli meat ball is still with
