Urla
Urla,
like several other settlements on the Aegean coast, played host
to many different civilisations due to its easy accessability. As
a result, Urla is overflowing with history. The castle walls situated
in Limantepe , are a sign that this is a contemporary cultured and
also central town .
There is evidence that the Hittites and also builders of the magnificent
Ionian city the Aka and Dor settlers lived in Urla and also that
it acted as a central town during the Persian, Greek, Roman and
Byzantinium periods. Due to its beauty Urla was chosen as the Byzantinium
Kings’ summer resting place. Later Urla passed into the hands of
the Seljuks , Crusaders, Beyliks and Ottomans.
Urla is a town which draws attention to its self with its natural
beauty amongst which are its healing waters, forests, beaches and
twelve islands each unique and each consisting of historical relics
and remains.
Archeological
expeditions at Limantepe have found seven different cultural stratums.
Classical and Archaic Ages , several different stages of the Bronze
Age , Sumer civilisation and even the Chalcolithic Age. Limantepe
is an archeological site with the longest and oldest history of
settlement on the Aegean coast.
The
oldest oliveoil factory in Anatolia can be found situated near Limantepe
and is an indication of the importance given to this product in
the area. With roots going as far back as 6 B.C an older factory
has yet to be found . Archeological research is still underway at
the Klazomenia oliveoil factory.
As in the Roman times, Urla is still popular as a summer resort
mainly due to its natural beauty and historical wealth. There are
many beautiful summer houses and beaches in Urla . Those of you
